Im planning to pierce my own ears but a lot of people are saying that its going to get infected. Is it really that important? Many of my freinds pierced their own ears and nothing bad happened to them.

Make sure whatever you use is sterilized. If your giong to use a simple sewing needle make sure you wash it with alcohol and put it under fire until it turns red. Put the alcohol after you burn it. You don't want to make an explosion now or get hurt. Don't burn yourself now. Let it cool down. Don't place it anywhere cause you just killed whatever bacteria was on it so hold it the whole time. Put alcohol where your going to pierce with a cotton ball and go for it. I did 13 of my holes and not once did I get an infection.

Here is what you need to know, first of all piercing guns are dangerous and here is why:
They do blunt force trama to the ear causing scar tissue
They can not be sterilized and can spread infectious diseases such as hepitis
The jewelry they insert into your ears is usually not long enough to allow for swelling causing the piercing to take longer to heal
they are more painful as the earing is blunt for piercing purposes (sharper then a normal stud but blunt by comparison to a hollow piercing needle)
Often they have to be done more then once as the earing will not shoot all the way through causing excess pain and bleeding
The mall girl has had at best 3 hours of training, a professional piercer has dedicated their life to learning the right way to pierce safely and has done an apprenticeship for a minimum of 6 months.

Now then Rubbing alcohol does not kill the staph virus which is the most common cause of infection in piercings only an autoclave can do that.
Fire, and boiling also don't kill the staph infection.
So don't kid yourself into thinking that you have sterilized the equipment you are using with any of the above methods.

If you insist on piercing your ears yourself do yourself a favor and search ebay for a piercing kit with presterilized jewelry, corks, and needles. Yes some people get lucky and do it themselves with no problems, but that is exactly what it is...LUCK
So do you feel lucky, because the staph virus can put you in the hospitol or kill you if it goes untreated.
So the real question you should be asking is ...Is your health and your life worth the risk?
I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to pass along the knowledge I wish I had when I pierced my own ears in high school, and the knowledge I wish my mother had when she got my ears pierced at the mall when I was 11 with an unsterile gun, and I passed out and no one knew what to do.
So while claire's is free it is also dangerous.
If you do not beleive me search the internet for "the dangers of piercing guns"
Good luck

Pretty high odds of infection, but the odds of not doing a good job, and it coming out looking bad is probably even higher. It's a tough thing to do to yourself.

Go to the mall, find a place that does it. They know what they're doing. Not only are they educated in preventing infection, but they're very good at placing the holes right where you want, not off-center, and not at a funny angle. And if you're a bit chicken, like me, they can even get two employees and do both ears at once, so it's easier to hold still. You're probably not bothered by it, if you want to do it your own self, but hey. This is your body you're talking about putting holes into, and you only get one body. Have a trained person use the right tools for the job.

I recamend going to a place with a permit for peircing, nothing fancy just somewhere where the people know what they are doing. Because of two reasons; 1) They might be crooked, 2) You get starter earings and all the cleaning stuff for your ears.

About the infection you are only a little bit more likely to get infected than if you did them your self.

Good Luck,
Kayla

i pierced my own ears and let me tell you it's all how well your body handles piercings (and mine handles it pretty well) and how sterile everything is
what i did was used straight rubbing alcohol to clean EVERYTHING...i soaked the earring in it and held a cotton ball behind my ear that was soaked in it as well
then, i just pierced it
no infections, not even redness.
but just be careful...if after a few days it's still red or swollen I would take it out and let it close immediately

it is very likely. i did it and they got infected really bad and i spent more money on the doctors visit and the prescription to get rid of it then i would have if i would of went to a piercing parlour. So have it done by a pro who is certified.

Uh...Its like $20 at the mall or any piercing/tatoo joint. They give you cleaner, use clean sterile needles, and a gun or professional needle. They've been doing it longer than you. So WHY would you do it yourself? 80% it will get infected, puss and bleed, swell, and stink.

It is highly likely that they will become infected. I suggest that you get them done at a salon. Essential beauty is good.
