The Hotels aren't the ones who provide the Bibles in there. It is a Christian Men's Organization called the Gideons. That is why Gideon's Bible is the one that you will see. They bring them to the Hotels and give them away for the Hotels to put in the rooms. They do this to spread the word of God. If one gets stolen, then they figure that person needed it, and they will gladly replace them as needed.

Sometimes they used to also hand out Bibles at schools, but the government put a stop to it (I think). They hand out Bibles everywhere they can. Here is a bit of info. about them:

The Gideons International, founded in 1899, serves as an extended missionary arm of the church and is the oldest Christian business and professional men's association in the United States of America. This is a primary function of The Gideons, placing and distributing Bibles and New Testaments in the human traffic lanes and streams of national life.

It's not the hotels, it's a group called the Gideons, who as they travel place bibles in the rooms they stay in as a kind of low key evangelism--they are there if someone wants one. They have other programs for distributing bibles as well, but the Gideon Bible in hotel rooms is the best known.

The hotels let a religious group called the Gideons do it.

Why? It doesn't cost them anything.

Aussie hotels have them too. It's in case you're in the hotel room about to have an affair - It reminds you that you're going to hell.
