When light strikes a window pane, some of it is reflected and the rest of it proceedes through. If anything is on the other side of the window pane, the light will strike it, bouunce back to the window, and some of it will be reflected back into the room and the rest will travel through, allowing you to see the object inside.

A similar thing happens when you wet jeans. The water changes the way the light "bounces" off your jeans. Basically it causes more light to be reflected when it hits the surface of the water (shiney wet surface effect) and less light to travel back through once it strikes the fibres in your jeans. So the jeans look darker because less light is getting to them and less light is getting back to you.
