double layers hold more info, really handy for mass storage. if you arent worried about the extra space you may can still find the older single layer units around but im not sure the media would be that much cheaper, do some price comparitive shopping.

A dual layered DVD burner is a burner that is able to write onto dual layered DVDs besides regular DVDs and Cd's. The difference between a regular DVD and a dual layered one is that the dual layered DVD has a second layer to write on. Therefore the dual layered DVD holds twice as much as a regular DVD. As for the best burner I would say a plextor but those are expensive running around $100 and up. The cheapest brand would be Light-On. They are basically all the same, but the problem wit the cheaper burners is that they dint last as long usually. The plextor would be your best bet but since your on a budget I would go for either a Sony, Samsung, or Pioneer. One other thing I would do if I were you is to buy it with a warranty in case it breaks on you since DVD players/burners have a known history for breaking within a couple years. I would buy it on newegg.com or search for it on pricegrabber.com to pay the lowest price. Good luck :).

A dual-layered DVD drive burns dual-layered DVDs. Basically a dual-layered DVD is two DVD discs in one. The laser is angled as such so that both sides (essentally) can have information written to it. Most DVD videos you find at the store are dual-layered.

A single layered DVD holds 4.7 GB where as dual-layered holds about twice as much.

Sony makes excellent dual-layered DVD drives however if you want to price check and maybe cut yourself a deal, I'd try pricewatch.com or newegg.com
