The craft and techniques of Acting can be taught. The Art cannot. My old acting teacher used to say. "You can't put in what God has left out."

I do think some people are born with an innate talent for acting. That being said, it is also a skill which can be learned - for the most part.

If a person starts out with enthusiasm, intelligence, an open mind and just a little talent, she (or he) can study and turn herself into an actor. Maybe not a great actor, but certainly someone who will work.

A person with born talent, who studies acting, can be brilliant. Look at Meryl Streep. That woman was born to act, but she studied very hard (and still does) to perfect her craft.

If she starts out with no talent whatsoever, and studies her heart out, she might never be an actor - but she can become a movie star!

Lying isn't acting. Lying is Lying. Acting is performing truthfully in crafted circumstances. The techniques can be taught, but unless you are able to imbue those techniques with a sense of honesty and truth, you can't be a good actor.
Everyone has the potential to be an actor, but becoming a GOOD actor involves the necessity of removing the self from the performance. This is debilitatingly scary to most people, and rightfully so. Acting makes you more vulnerable than any profession on earth and those that are good at it can scare those who aren't. In medieval times, actors were buried under the crossroads rather than in graveyards because what they did was considered an abomination to god.
So yes, you can learn the techniques, but you better be willing to sacrifice everything if you want to be good at it.

It depends on what you mean.

People act every day of their lives. They use acting to manipulation people into getting what they want. For example, a teenager who wants money from mom or dad. Or, a person will use acting to get out of a situation. For example, someone telling you that your friends told a horrible rumor about you when really they did it. The person is leading your off track with acting.

Although people act every day, there are a select few who have a passion for it. Those are the people you see in movies and on stages. They have chosen to hone in on their natural skills.

Of course, people say "So and so is a bad actor." Well, "bad actors" are usually people who refuse to let themselves become the characters. They're too afraid to let go and deliver lines as if they are the actual character.

It helps to have some talent and certainly a strong interest but acting can be learned. The fact is even talented actors need to learn technique. Some people are indeed born with a special talent for it, but that does not exclude those who are not. I would like to clarify one thing, acting is about honesty not dishonesty. It can indeed be used for dishonest purposes but it has to be essentially honest in it's protrayal to work correctly.

Acting is absolutely not lying. Acting is having the ability to turn a script into reality, its about temporarily transforming a character using hard core talent. It entails your body movement, voice, hand gestures etc... skillfully. Its like knowing you're in love. No one can tell you you just know it, you feel it in all the time. I'm not saying that no one can become an actor, I will say that if it comes from the heart, its mostly your destiny. So for those of you whom are confused with the definition. Please look to the dictionary or even go on-line. Thanks

As with all crafts, some people have greater natural facility, however acting can be taught and learned. Virually all truly excellent actors spend considerable time learning their crafts.

I think you need some talent for acting. It can't all be learned as some people just don't have the talent or aptitude for it.
