humans are very easily manipulated by fear: fear of death, fear of the unknown, fear that the terrorists are planning yet more attacks, fear of failure and, oddly enough , also of success, fear of being unpopular, you get the idea. so if first you play on the fear--then you can offer a solution. one, surprisingly enough, that "your" company can provide, usually at an inflated price: bogus remedies for almost everything, especially overweight. give up your liberties and we'll save you from the dreadful terrorists who blew up the wtc (who are on our payroll), take our supplements or your prostate will drop out(a little joke). plant the fear, provide the solution--always works! some of the insincere, unbelievably greedy, jaded, psychopaths who have been using this formula forever, have even invented illnesses for which they then provided "the only cure" so, the short answer: it always works--it always earns profits. how to combat this "psychological terrorism"? ratchet up human consciousness about 10,000% for,at least, the perpetrators. for the consumer: wise up to the game. could be a long wait.

I think it's just an extension of the way fear is used in every other part of our lives--politics ("They're going to get you if you don't vote for me!"), religion ("God told me you're going to burn if you don't do what I tell you!"), education ("If you don't pass this, you'll never have a life!"), etc. Because it works. So the real question is, why does it work? Because too many people lack any faith in their own intelligence or strength or ability to make their own choices. To put it another way, the fear that I might suffer (physically, mentally, socially) can be made to outweigh what I should know from my own experience: that for most of us, most of the time, life is actually fairly safe and boring. Ironically, the one REAL fact of life--that we're all going to die, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it--should put everything else into perspective, to the point where we should enjoy what mostly does happen rather than fear what mostly doesn't. (And also accept the inevitable--sorry guys, but someday even Viagra isn't going to work...) But: that's human nature--and advertisers long ago figured out how to use it against us...

Fear is a basic instinct of human beings... so is greed... so if you have fear of not being able to have something you feel you are entitled to, or fear of not having something you may feel you need, then you are more likely to buy it.

Fear will get people's attention, that's why. It's really snarly of anyone to use fear tactics.
