Modem... MoDem... Modulator / Demodulator... is a device which turns digital signals into tones that can be transmitted over communications lines.
Digital signals are square waves, 1's and 0's from the computer, and they do not travel over communications lines very well....
Your modem turns the 1's into one tone.. say for example 1khz (1000 cycles per second audio) and the 0's into another tone say for example 2khz audio... so they can travel over the phone lines easily.... this is Modulating the signal...
On the other end.. the receiving modem Demodulates the 1khz tones into 1's and the 2khz tones into 0's for the computer to accept.
it is actually much more complex for DSL and hi-bandwidth modems.. but you get the idea i hope.
Internal modems are a card inside your computer with a phone-jack to connect to the telephone line... Advantages.. take up less room and don't need yet another outlet on your power strip!!
External modems can connect to a serial port (old fashioned ones are this way) or to your USB port... advantages.. easy to change if it breaks... and.. if you watch the lights on the front very carefully during modem-to-modem games.. you may be able to figure out what the other person is doing!! hehe... Disadvantages... take up more deskspace and take another outlet on your power strip.

Modem stands for "modulator-demodulator." It uses sound to carry data over the analog voice network. By changing frequencies it is able to indicate different types data to a modem on the other side of the connection. It is basically a device that converts digital (1 and 0) into analog sound frequencies and then reconverts it sound back to digital on the other side.

Wow! You're getting an MBA and you don't know what a modem is? Higher education is overrated. Or you're not getting your money's worth.
