He raises his hand (in my state) and swears to tell the truth so help him (God is no longer often mentioned). Some religious practices forbid the swearing of an oath, so those persons "affirm" they will tell the truth. The penalty for perjury is the same.

i am assuming you mean stateside, like in the usa? if you profess to be an atheist (of course you are now in court & lying is very serious business) you would probably not be asked to swear on the bible but would be asked to hold up your right hand & DO SO SOLEMNLY AFFIRM WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SAY IS THE TRUTH.... there was a time that atheists would not be welcomed in court or town but things have changed. in other countries outside usa, you'd have to check with them. some countries might throw you in jail just for being a professed atheist. keep in mind, however, as the old saying goes, in foxholes & when facing deep deep sh*t, there are no atheists.

If one doesn't like the bible, say in court "I agree to be subject to the penalty for perjury if I lie or deliberately misrepresent the facts"

No court in the land (USA) will fail to nod yes and say "take the stand" , agreeing that you have signed the contract, since it's on the record.

I guess they would because the major systems governmental and the majority of the US think that every one else happens to be a Christian. Well if they had an atheist sware on the bible it would well be easy for them to lie because it means absolutely nothing.
