That is an important philosophical question. There is a whole field of study that addresses this question called aesthetics. Basically, it comes down to whether one believes that there are absolute standards or just personal ones. If universal, then beauty would be those things that most closely conform with those standards. If there is only personal opinion, then really "beauty" doesn't exist, it is just another way of saying that something is pleasing to us. This is an extremely simplistic description. Many philosophers have spent their lives looking into this question. If you are are interested in it more just look up "aesthetics" or the "philosophy of art" also deals with this question.

Beauty is beautiful...
The sun rising in the morning witch every one can see, at some point in time and know that it is there.
Beauty
Is the night sky that no one even seems to see, but yet will always exist.
Beauty
Is when you look into your lovers eyes and know that she s the one.
Beauty
Is the air you breathe ever little second that keeps you living.
Beauty
is the mother who wept when her child was born
Beauty
Is an the eye of the person that sees what they want to see.

As a social scientist, beauty is what others find appealing about you. Sounds a lot like attraction, but here's where they differ: beauty is often said to be in the eyes of the beholder, but in order for you to find a mate, beauty is in their eyes too.

Anyway, beauty holds a biological value as a sign of fertility meaning that you'll produce healthy babies, but attraction is what others see in you as beauty.

Beauty is a feeling based on our own personal tastes, societal and cultural endoctrination and inspires us to cherish and nurture ourselves and others to make the world a better place than the way we found it.
