I don't know if Becky actually read your entire question...but I don't remember reading any value judgement on why people might be homophobic.
Homophobia is the fear of gays. It has been found in study after study, including the studies that attach instruments that measure arousal. In that particular study (reported on 20/20) 4 out of 5 guys who made hateful, homophobic statements (that go far beyond simply not agreeing with the "lifestyle") were markedly aroused when shown images of gay sex. 5 out of 5 guys who had not exhibited homophobia showed no signs of arousal when shown the same images.
The answer to your question is yes.

I'm not sure that they can identify themselves as gay, but the worst homophobes I've run across eventually wound up as VERY gay and at the time they were processing their own angst, they were extremely vocal about not being gay, because of the stigma associated with being sympathetic.

There are a fair number of people who use homophobia as a means of denying their own attraction towards the same sex. Hence, the four types of homophobia are:
1. Denial - Using homophobia to deny one's own same sex attraction.
2. Fear/Misunderstanding - Misconceptions about gay people e.g. gays wil try and turn everyone gay, gays molest children, gays spread AIDS.
3. Religious homophobia - Religious people who feel called upon by their religious beliefs to speak out against same sex attraction.
4. I'm straight so therefore its the correct thing - People who cannot see beyond the sphere of their own tastes/attractions. The same people will also apply the same beliefs to food tastes and hobbies e.g. trainspotting is really sad - because I don't do it myself so therefore no-one should be doing this.

yes, unfortunately. Yes. Seems that attacking gays gives them a feeling of superiority... pitiful people living in a personal hell wish to make everyone about them live in the same place. J.Edar Hoover and Roy Cohen are prime examples of creeps like this.

There are four basic levels of Homophobia:
1. The fear and hatred of gays and lesbians. Gay and lesbian people live in constant fear of assault and harassment. They are regularly attacked for no other reason than their assailants' homophobia. (96% of gay men have experienced verbal abuse because of their sexual preference, over 40% have experienced physical violence.)
2. The fear of being perceived as gay or lesbian. Gay people are forced to stay in the closet for fear of suffering the prejudices and further pain. Whether gay, bisexual or heterosexual, men are afraid to ask for and to express the physical caring and emotional intimacy we feel for one another for fear of being thought "gay". Men often place demands on women to provide the nurturance, touching and affection they can not seek from one another.
3. The fear of one's own sexual or physical attraction for same-sex individuals. It is natural to be attracted to and even turned on by same-sex people. We do not have to choose to act on these feelings; nor do we have to suppress them, run away from them, or hurt others to prove we're a "real" man.
4. The fear of being gay or lesbian. On average, one person in ten is gay. Amongst your family members, your friends, your co-workers, the public figures you admire, one in every ten is gay. While some have been embittered by society's prejudices, the vast majority of gay people lead diverse, well adjusted, satisfying lives.

For the most part, yes. More so when you go down south. Its not manly and a "pansy" wont be able to do the rugged work that a "real" man can do.
