I have a 1997 Holden Vectra GL, shows check Engine light when i start. All fluid levels ok. any idea? I've been searching on the internet, and ppl seem to think its a faulty crank angle sensor. are there any other sensors which could be contributing? can i still drive this car with the engine light on for this reason?

Sometimes it's as simple as making sure your gas cap is secure when replacing it after refueling.

I'm gonna have to look up that car now, but here is your best bet...

Go to your local auto parts store and buy the HANES REPAIR MANUAL for that make, model, year.

They have all the how too's and where for's, and explain everything real well.

Modern cars and the computer systems controling the engines respond to numberous sensors and conditions.

There is a way for you to get the code from the on board computer ( that's what mechanics do to see what's going on ).

The book will tell you how to retrieve the code.

The code will tell you what area or sensor is giving you trouble.

The code will be in the repair manual, and the solution will be there to.

Best of Wishes.

I would check the simple before referring to a faulty sensor and sort i would check the fuel cap first make sure it is tight and it is seated correctly if this had occured recently and it turns out to be a fuel cap issue you will bite yourself i have seen this happen many times and believe it or not it may take up to 2 weeks for the light to go off....i would say it would be ok to drive but to make sure why do you run down to a auto parts store and have them due a free obd2 scan they more an likely can give you a code and even research the code for you and if they can do that then you can have the dealer verify the code for you...hope this helps!!

That car is old enough and in fact just about the right age for average driving so that you (like sooooo many others) have been caught in the manufacturers scam. There is a computer code programed in to the computer that triggers at the preset time to get you to take it back to the (a co) dealer for a complete check up. Any Auto Zone (and others) are aware of this, for some reason little known fact, and can re-set it for you FOR FREE!!!

sometimes at intervals of about 30,000 miles the computer automatically triggers a "check engine soon" light it's usually related to nothing and can be reset by disconnecting the battery and draining memory from the onboard computer. On your model I'm not sure what to do. Best take it to place as described above>
