I know it is getting rid of an unborn child, but what does the doctor do?

It depends how far along you are. Sometimes they give pills that cause you to bleed and lose the baby; sometimes you are put under general anesthesia and go through a procedure called a D&C. If you are very far along, you may have to go through an entire birth.
A friend of mine who aborted due to severe defects in the heart (part of a syndrome, even a heart transplant could not have saved the baby) had to go through a birth since she was almost 5 months along.
Regardless of how simple the procedure is, it has significant emotional impact.

They used to stick a hanger type thing up there and swish it around, but now they give you a pill that causes a miscarriage or what the other girl said and it terminates the unborn child. A person is considered dead when there heart is no longer beating. A baby in the wombs heart start beating at about 15-18 days after conception, therefore the unborn child is alive!!!! So yes it is getting rid of an unborn child!!!

The most common type of abortion is a suction abortion. The abortionist must first force open the cervix (the opening to the womb). Because the cervix is very tightly closed to protect the baby, this may result in permanent damage. (In childbirth, by contrast, the cervix opens gradually and naturally.) And for the record, it's technically not an "unborn child" it's terminating an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy.
I whole "unborn child" thing really just makes me angry.

To answer your question: There are tools used to break through the mucus plug in the cervix and it is forcefully opened up enough for tools to be inserted to break out and scrape out everything that will come out in pieces.

They give you a few pills to expand your cervix and then they stick a tube in you that works like a vacuum and they suck the baby out of you.
