Hi Marine,
I wish you the best of luck. May you be elsewhere when bits of metal fly through the air. May you never see your buddies hurt or killed. May our troops be called home so soon that you will never have to fire your weapon at anyone besides pop up targets.
You see, Marine, I HAVE been there. Not in Iraq, but in another senseless war. And yes, I was not fighting for ideals, I was fighting to stay alive and to keep my buddies alive. In the end that is what you do.
My job? Burning crops and people to death. It did not make America any freer. It did not give you the right to vote. It did not liberate the people whose country we were occupying.
I was from a poor family and could not afford to go to school. Plus my homelife sucked. So the Army was a way out. My family acted all proud of me. My dad was wounded in WWII. My grandfather in WW I. Guess it was a tradition - get messed up because we were not well off.
Anyway, I made it out fairly ok. I was tortured. Got a gimpy leg from that. VA took 30 years to recognize that as service connected. They are shooting off fireworks tonight and I want to crawl under my bed. Ah, but that is normal. 1 in 3 Iraqi vets come back with some PTSD. Vietnam vets can talk with you about that. Lost lots of my upper range hearing due to machine guns and explosives. Hearing aids the VA gives you are not a good substitute BTW. Guard your hearing.
But the nightmares are still the worst. I still get those. Get them everytime we are at war. I don't watch TV, you can understand that.
So you are getting all that rah-rah from folks and that is cool. Man, I truly do wish you well. Do your bit and get home safe and sound. Do not do anything you are ashamed of. Promise your mother and girl that. Never do anything you cannot look yourself in the mirror afterwards. Never.
Remember, too, that we can be opposed to war and still support you. I know that is hard to separate out, but it is true. Hope you get a better homecoming than Korean and Vietnam vets did.

America is our country, regardles if we are for or against war, it is well worth fighting for. I would much rather there be no wars, but in some cases it is unavoidable. But in some wars, the fight is much more than just a country, its about freedom. We need to defend freedom at all costs. We can't just stand on the side lines and just look while others are being deprived of their freedom. We are the supper power of the world, the deffenders of freedom. We say Liberty & Justice for All and we mean it. No war will ever be completely just. There will be innocent people that will die. It is a price and a sacrafice that must be paid. If we don't do anything about it, it is like approving or partaking in those injustices that are done to people. Of course I support you, but be prepared to represent us with pride. Be prepare to endure the challenges that you will face. And if you find yourself in a moment of lonelyness or doubt, remember We The People Of The United States Of America, believe in you.

Of course America is worth fighting for! It's just a really tough job. But good luck. Keep your head low, fall in line as best you can (the DI is gonna hound you either way...gotta tear you down so they can build a man outta ya), and, when you get into the real Marines, and have to go to battle, avoid the whizzing bullets.
Semper Fi, Marine.

Good for you. Its not whether we think if America is still worth fighting for, it whether you do or not. However, I do thank you for your SERVICE to our country. You'll get something out of the experience as well, so its a good path for a young person to take. Keep in mind though that you are SERVING and you deserve recognition and thanks, but alot of people over the generation and have done their part, so your'e not THAT special in that respect. What I'm trying to say is please don't get too cocky. Being a Marine (or a vet of any service) does not earn you any special rights and shouldn't make you think your better than any other citizen who chooses a different path in life. But as one vet to a soon to be, I once again thank you.

I respect you decision to fight for this country. The main question America asks over and over is "When is war justified?". That has been the question from day one. You have your convictions, I have mine. As for me, when someone threatens the sanctity of someone elses right to live, and they cry out for help who will help them? Does not everyone deserve a chance to hear "other" news(like democracy, or freedom of speech). Since the 1700's I deeply belive that there has never been a time America has stopped being "worth" fighting for.

Although I do not agree with the reasons we are at war, the war itself, or almost anything Bush has done while he has been in office, I support the American troops 100%. They are risking their lives for something they believe in, and nothing is more honorable than that. We are at war; there is nothing that can be done to change the mistakes made in the past, and because the troops continue to try to save any last remains of pride the U.S. has left, they will always have my support.
