although there is no surefire way to teach someone to sing well, one great trick is this:

don't listen to everything around you. just listen to you. plug your ears and begin to sing, you will hear how you are sounding. then switch your key, pitch- or whatever sounds wrong, adjust it to what you're hearing. after practice, try to focus on this withough plugging your ears!

Go to a real voice teacher, preferably one associated with a college or university. Listen to their student recitals, and see what kinds of results the teacher has achieved. Choose someone you can trust, and someone who pushes you to work hard. They must understand and be able to demonstrate the style you wish to sing (classical, pop, jazz, etc.).
You should realize that understanding classical technique is #1 to developing top vocal skill. Don't be afraid of a teacher who makes you sing "opera-style" before letting you sing pop, jazz, or whatever it is you want to sing. This will only make you a better singer.
