Try Maxwll Quick Disc Repair, repairs minor scratches, eliminates disc skipping and sound loss. Costs about 99 cents.

Sounds strange but (often) works. Brush the DVD with an abrasive toothpaste. It takes out scratches.

even places like video world will rub the scratches out for you.....

peanut butter seems to work well on getting scratches out of almost everything also

You could buy another one... or ask the person you loaned it to to buy you another one because they wrecked it.

Or just apologize to your husband that the DVD is wrecked and offer to buy another one. If you're so afraid that he will 'find out' I wonder how healthy your relationship is in the first place....
