I still like Classical stuff and I see a lot of similarity between Classical and the kind of metal I listen to (symphonic, power, melodic, folk and some black).
Really, is it that supprising for a kid who likes Wagner to also like Therion? To me it was just a logical next step but my parents think it's oxymoronic.
What do you guys think?

No. Metal is just a more modern form of classical music. Why do you think that lots of metal bands record albums with symphony orchestras? Scorpions, Metallica, hell even Kiss did.

I was the same way when I was younger and I was raised on Big Band Jazz, Al Hurt, Buddy Rich etc. and Classical. Like you I would make comparisons between them and rock and I would also gave Classical and Jazz a fair shake. I will never forget my dads face when I put my just purchased, new Led Zeppelin 2 album on his prized tube amp stereo. He about crapped in his drawers and said if I ever played that crap on his stereo again the album would be his. Times have not changed today, have they not? Anyway, exposure to Classical is a good thing because it teaches you to be more rounded and gives you the skills to give all music a chance. I feel so sorry for people who have locked themselves into one kind of music style. If they only realized what they are missing.

Well, think about it. Every type of music we have today is derived from classical music. The classical scale was evolved into the blues scales (And perfected by the African Americans many years ago). The blues scale was split into country, rock and R&B (and still blues and jazz, and just about every other type of music). So, to answer your question, no, it isn't surprising. It's all the same, some people just don't understand how that's possible.

Nah,,,, you are perfectly normal.

Music is music, it doesn't matter if it is Classical or Rock. I bet if you really listen to some Rock you will hear some Classical mixed in there.
My family listens to all types of music, my children love it all, and I believe this was key in making them as well-rounded as they are. GOOD LUCK!

so you have eclectic tastes in music? So what? That's like saying you can't like chocolate AND still like cheese. Or you can't like coffee if you like orange juice. People have a variety of tastes in things, and sometimes you just happen to like two things that are different from each other. I'd call it "well-rounded". By the way...I like classical, west african, arabic, punk, rock AND metal music.

I don't think it is weird at all. I listened to country growing up and now I listen to that and metal. My friends do think I am a little crazy because of it though.
