If you're using Internet explorer, try using a different browser. Mozilla Firefox is excellent. It is less prone to those pop ups and security problems.

Also, install a good firewall.

Stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer and install a copy if Mozilla's Firefox. It will block any and all pop ups on the web as well as allow you to configure it for those sites that you may want to allow them to come through. There are lots of skins and extensions available as well. You may lose a bit of functionality as "cnn.com" does not support Firefox for its videos and some sites with ActiveX may not work completely, but in my opinion it's worth the trade off. Try it, what have you got to lose but a bit of time installing it and kicking the tires.
