It seems like all the other countries in the world live for this event. I feel all alone in the states since not many people care about it.

I can't tell you how many times my friends and I have said this to each other when we go out to watch the matches at bars.

I think our experience yesterday trying to watch the Brazil-France game is a good example: ABC wasn't going to be showing the match, just ESPN. My friends and I are all poor grad students without cable, so we were going to have to watch the match in a bar somewhere--and, this being upstate New York, you can't get any Spanish-language channels with your antenna that might have been showing the game. We head to this [horrible] bar and settle in to watch the match, but they've got the music in the bar turned up so loud we can't hear the game. On top of that, there's some drunk [at 3 pm] trying to hit on us. Were we in another country, I doubt any bar would have had music blaring over the Brazil-France game, and all the drunks would have been too busy cursing France out to bother us.

We left that bar at the half in search of another that would be showing the game (which is kind of more difficult than usual right now because we've had flooding and some of our favorite bars are under water). We walked around the area and found nothing--not even just a restaraunt that might have a TV. So, the second half is about to start and we get in the car to drive around to the surrounding areas trying to find a bar. The game's on, and yet NO radio station is broadcasting it for us--This I think is definitely a uniquely American thing; if we had been almost anywhere else, we wouldn't have had a problem. After about 15 minutes, we finally had to call someone to tell us what had happened, and he broke the news that France had scored.

We finally get to a bar we frequent that has 2 TV's, and neither were on the game. Luckily the bartender was nice enough to turn one onto the game for us. At the end, we were only ones in the bar talking about the game at all. We went outside to smoke, and there were a few other people outside, no one talking about this shocking game. I think in any other country, we would have definitely not had to console ourselves alone.

So, yes, we wish we were in another country.

I've watched the World Cup in football loving countries before. It's a ton of fun to see everyone REALLY get into the games. But in the US, there's not much of that going on...

YES!!!!
I was just in Australia for a month and they were going CRAZY about the soccerroos!!!!
Here in the US people just don't get so swept up about soccer and its kinda dissapointing cuz soccer is a universal sport! It's so much fun!
And watching soccer in another country was a blast! It's like football season here all over again but with a different sport!
Dont get me wrong I LOVE AMERICA, but yeah....I'd prefer to watch the world cup games in Australia again.....
good question btw

I would have, but not in England or Brazil yesterday ;)

I actually heard some men talking about going home to "watch Ronaldinho" when I was at Sheetz. I was happy to hear that, but I was also worried they would say something about England/Portugal since the game was tucked away safely on the DVR.

If I could go to any ground to watch a game, it would be Arsenal vs Manchester United at Old Trafford :)

You're not alone Steve. I, too, love the international game and would love to be at a match in Brazil, Italy, or any other country that is passionate about the sport. If you are interested in talking about it, just E-mail me and I'll be glad to discuss it with you. I still have much to learn about it.

It's part of America's isolationism. We feel we're better than everyone. Maybe not us, but our government does.

So soccer is below us, so much below us that we dont even call it football like everyone else.
