There must be plenty of rats in your house, which are the good feed for the snakes. That's why they live there. The other thing may be that your house may be in the outskirts or near the farmlands or forests and also the yard of the house may not be cemented.
The best way is to keep a cat which can finish the rats as well as the snakes. Also get the yard cemented ore paved by brick tiles, if not already done. Make sure that the holes of the rats and snakes are filled with concrete cement. No chemical can repell the snakes.

I don't like snakes either. You didn't say if they were poisonous or just harmless garter snakes. Most of those just eat insects or frogs or small gold fish if you have a pond. I have four cats and they might harass a snake, but won't kill it. I heard once that cowboys sleeping on the ground would surround themselves with their lariats/rope since snakes don't like to crawl over it. Or you could decide to get over the phobia. I made myself touch a small garter snake laying on a raspberry vine. It was very cooperative, and I'm not as afraid of them as I used to be. P.S. Only try this if you live in a place that has no poisonous snakes!!

Alot of snakes are repelled by moth balls. Put some around your yard, under the patio/deck, around the fence and anywhere that they might like to hide, and then go inside right away and don't go back out for a day or two. It should get rid of most snakes. They don't like the smell.

you have snakes because you have a food source for them, mice insects or other food they are catching in your yard. Eliminate the food source and the snakes will leave on there own.
