Can you imagine if America and Canada just said, "You know, we are so close as it is and do so much business together why don't we just save ourselves the trouble and become one country." And then we did. What would that be like? The two countries would metamorphisies into something bigger, and become extremly, extremly powerful and huge. Politically and economicly how would that be?

Canada separates into 10 providences and 3 territories too<1> ; the USA would then have 60 states.

The money and central bank would need to be merged, taxing powers merged, social services (health care, 911, retirement) merged ... I believe that Canada is more socialist than the USA and we'd definantly be bickering greatly over the benefits ... then the Mexicans would run amuck into Canada also to get the free stuff we provide ...

I personally like Canada separated from us ... when I travel abroad, I say I'm Canadian instead of American: except in Amsterdam where the Canadians are laughed at.

This would not happen, because Canadians have a very distinct system of values that are different than those of the U.S. I am not saying Canadians are superior or better than Americans, because I also generally like Americans ... it is a complete cultural clash. One major difference for example is Canadians voting against joining the Coalition forces for the war in Iraq. Canadians also value having publicly funded health insurance for all and consider some issues to be non-market items, while many Americans feel differently.

First of all, the Canadians would never allow for it. And what would be the point? One country or the other would have to give up its governing rights, or at least, leaders of both countries would have to submit to a "superpresident". It would be too financially difficult...we have enough problems to deal with without adding millions more citizens. We already look imperialistic enough by being in so many other foreign countries, that to peaceably "take over" Canada would make us look really bad to the other superpowers, and then they might just have to take us out....

No this would not happen. It would remain pretty much as it is. Canadians would never consider themselves Americans, and we'd be constantly squabbling over rights and freedoms.

We spent a great deal of time working out how to extradite ourselves from the UK. We would not want to become part of the US.

I would hate to see that happen. I love both countries! I'm Canadian but living in the U.S. I like that each of them are so different and would hate to see it merge into one. Both are great countries!
