all of our windows open horizontally instead of vertically, will it hurt the ac?

It certainly will.... the compressor contains refrigerant oil.... the oil need to be at the proper level to properly lubricate the compressor. Installing it on its side will cause the compressor, which is the heart of any ac system, to sieze up, burn up or last, but certainly not least.... burst the high pressure line, then have the compressor burn up.

ABSOLUTELY NOT----at least consider mounting the unit as near the window as possible then by the use of tin flashing or other similar materials create a duct work to join the two elements together (a/c and window opening)

No you should never store or place any kind of air or refrigeration unit on it's side. It will cause damage to the compressor and other components of the unit.

Do not put it on it's side. It can only be running if it is sitting upright the way it is supposed to be. Sorry.

no they are designed to operate setting in a horizontal position

do not do this. you'll bow lots of money. the freon will leak into the other side of the compressor and that'll be it. BOOM.
