Actually the indians were just, for lack of a better phrase, "push close to extinction", not defeated. We don't speak Native American for different reasons. One being that their is no actaul solitary Native American tounge. The another is that this is no longer the land on the natives. We do as the romans do in rome because it is the land of the romans.

because like the Romans the conquered speak the language of the conquerors. (remember the Indians lost, matter of fact most of them dont even speak the language of the forefathers.)

Because the romans didn't rediscover america the portugese and the spanish did.
