Birds obviously don't think like we do, although there are some very smart birds, even birds that talk. Focus would be on food and safety. Most sexual behavior in birds is instinctive, they don't think about it.
Most birds are not predators (well maybe to bugs) so they have to worry about cats, people, birds of prey. Very few birds are hit by cars anymore, so they have learned to avoid them.
If you were a bird, i think a cage would be the worst thing in the world. "Free as a bird" is an expression for a reason.

Where's the worms, where's the water, where's the seeds, where's the suet. I wish those squirrels would get out of here. Gosh those fledglings eat a lot. I sure could use a nice bath. The worms arn't biting today. How many nests will the female have me build before she's finally happy. I like the summer days with the longer daylight hours. Tweet, tweet, twee-del-dee, twee-del-de-dum. Tweet, tweet I'll be glad when the 4th of July celebrating is over. These fireworks are giving me the shakes.

LMAO!! I'm sorry, I have no idea what birds think, if they think. Aren't they birdbrains?
What I do know is how good it sounds to be sitting on the porch watching fireworks and drinking tequillas---I am soooo envious right now! Have fun, you guys. With the question asked, I hope he's not got far to drive home tonight! :-)

The birds are thinking your father-in-law is a lightweight if he's only going to have 3 tequillas!

That they should be drinking with your father in law.
Actually, I don't think birds have that much thought process to be honest with you.
Have fun watching the fireworks though!

I suppose they think the same things most animals think.
1. Where can I find food? Can I eat that?
2. Where can I find a mate?
3. Can I make a nest here?
4. Are my children safe?
5. Is someone new in my territory? I'd better announce myself.
6. What's that object, animal or sound? Is it dangerous?

Birds are animals and therefore don't think. They lack the capacity to form cognitive thought. Man is the only animal that has that ability. If birds could think, they most likely would think about where they could find food.

I have a 19 year old chinese snow goose that thinks its a dog. It was raised with a cockapoo but outlived it. Now it hangs with a goldern retriever and an australian shepherd. You should see the stupid thing trying to chew on old shoes like the dogs do.
