I'm with ya. I can't stand it. It's all bleeped, so you can't even understand what curse words they're saying. I hate it. I like rock, too.

Interestingly enough, I find that most people who say they hate rap don't know as much about it as they think they do (i.e. - the difference between an MC and a rapper...and yes, there is a difference). Most of them base their opinions on that rap that the mainstream media force feeds us. I'm hear to tell you that not all rap is about drugs, money, bling, sex and guns, and not all rap is misogynistic and riddled with profanity. But I can understand why you feel that way, considering that's all most of us see on TV and hear on the radio - rappers talking about sex and drugs. For the record, I can't stand most mainstream rap either. However...

What most of the people that complain about rap's many vices don't realize is that they're only seeing one dimension of rap. The mainstream media has been oversaturated by these cookie-cutter rappers who spout nonsense because right now, they're the ones bringing their record companies the most money. Some, like me, might be old enough to remember this and some might not be, but back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's there was a lot of variety and substance to rap. You could turn on the radio and hear conscious (as in socially/politically conscious), gangsta, old-school, jazz-infused, comical and storytelling styles of rap back to back in one sitting (or one car trip). THAT is what's sorely lacking in mainstream rap right now - variety and substance. There's nothing to choose from anymore, kinda like going to McDonald's and seeing nothing but fries on the overhead menu.

Fortunately for those of us who haven't given up on hip hop, there's still variety and substance out there if you know where to look. There's always one source of good, quality rap music: the underground circuit. For instance...

And if you're into beats/instrumentals more than the MC, then check out some stuff from Jay Dee, aka - J Dilla (R.I.P.), 9th Wonder, Nicolay and Fat Jon (aka - Fat Jon The Ample Soul Physician) to name a few.

Try it. You might like it. ^_^

Rappers do not only rap about sex and drugs. While a startling majority of it does, there is some decent rap.
Rock also contains it's fair share of violent and sexually explicit material.
I wrote an essay of the demoralization of America one time, so I know where you're coming from.
BTW- my two fave genres, in order- rock, hip-hop

I hate rap. I'm more of a rock person. I like Green Day, Radio 4, Blue October, Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects, Wheezer, Simple Plan, and Nickleback. There's only one good rapper {in my point of view} and that is Eminem.

I agree. I am a rocker to. I think rap glorifies some pretty messed up stuff. The reason todays youth is getting so crappy is because rap and hip hop are popular.

well i just think its very idiotic that mtv is so money hungry that they dont care what crappy music videos they show,as long as it makes a huge profit.most of them are rap, but others are pop and emo groups. they dont show metal videos unless its on headbangers ball. i think its because metal is a bit more serious than other genres. some rock is about sex, drugs, rock n roll. but it doesnt encourage it as much as rap does. ill live and die for rock n roll so rap is never gonna be in my musical equation, cuz if it was id get an error on my calculator.

It is worse than just that ....here are lyrics to a few of NWA's songs...
http://www.nwaworld.com/lyrics/niggaz4/findum.shtml
http://www.nwaworld.com/lyrics/posse/fatgirl.shtml
http://www.nwaworld.com/lyrics/niggaz4/swallow.shtml

if it were just sex..that would be one thing...but lyrics from L'il Kim, 2Live Crew, Notorious BIG, NWA, Ice Cube, Dre, Easy E, MC Ren, Snoop Dogg etc..

These men and Kim, whose lyrics are about the degradation of women, making fun of women, pimping women, prostitution, drugs, explicit sexual activity, drugs, gangs, etc...are to THEM the way of life in South Central...so it is OK...that they talk about these things and not only sell them as positive aspects of their perspective neighborhoods or their past...but they also SELL said material and MAKE A PROFIT off of their own people EXPLOITING the poverty and lack of education of their own people. They PROMOTE the N word and due to the fact that white kids are purchasing rap CDs MORE than African Americans...NOW the N word has become a victim of a desensitized society on both sides...THE ONLY PEOPLE who respect the N word for what it REALLY was in years past as a SEVERELY offensive word are the Whites, Latinos and African Americans in the Generation X and baby Boomer generations..

everyone else spits it out because they hear it in Rap CDs and they sing the lyrics...they sing every word and half of those words they would NEVER use in any other context...but because they are alone in their car....they yell out extremely offensive and highly racial epithets...

and as ALWAYS the racial DOUBLE standards apply:
1) African Americans CAN say it regardless of how offensive it may be...whites can NEVER say it...
2) Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, etc...as per their wives' and themselves on MTV ....THEY CAN NOT USE this language at their own homes AND THEY DON'T LET THEIR KIDS LISTEN!!!! but it is ok that our kids do????

RAP is the biggest shaggy dog tale ever performed on the yankee public. It should not be considered music. variety one, maximum of it demeans women persons and promotes violence. provide me a destroy about 'makin it on da street..yeah, existence's so complicated' each and absolutely everyone has a danger to flow to varsity, get an guidance and get off the line. yet then, that's 'performing white'. I heard a black neurosurgeon speaking on the radio about starting to be up in Harlem. He pronounced that it became like residing in a pan of crabs. You under no circumstances could positioned a lid on it because once you commence to move slowly out...the others will drag you go into reverse. Rap is about money, era. same, boring hand gestures..gansta wannabes. Yeah, they are undesirable. no one is stimulated. i'd opt to hearken to a rap artist truly attempt to sing. will under no circumstances ensue. all of us can communicate..all of us can make rhymes. would not take skills like Dylan or the Beatles. The 1960s were about peace and love. HipHop/Rap is about violence. And those fools are making thousands of thousands. total, pathetic shaggy dog tale.

Well, for example, gangster rap, should never have been "invented." It has resulted in way too many homicides as a result of taking young people into its genere, looking for a way to identify themselves with the far left, liberal song lyrics. It is a big part of the "dumbing down" of young people in our present society due to their lack of going along with ordinary education methods that have not yet found a way to keep up with the sub-culture of this devious type of so-called music. If you notice, the rapper doesn't even sing, he just talks, with rhythm, installing his venom into minds eager to learn what they think will make them "cool" with their peers. Too bad they are led down the wrong path like that. Parents should be the first line of defense in cases like this. You seem to already realize that. Good for you! Keep up the good thinking--and be sure and relay this type of good thinking to your peers, your friends. Grow up thinking that way and you will have a better chance to have a good life in whatever you decide to do in a career!
