"Sandbagging" in almost any competition is when someone deliberately holds back, so they look less impressive. Then, when the stakes are raised, they pull out all the stops. This is like a guy running NOS but not letting anyone know because he has the bottle under the rear seat and the hose line can be coiled back by the firewall. Lose a few races, then go for pinks, and presto, instant world beater.

I think this idea originally came from golf where a guy would play some holes, intentionally hitting into the sand traps, raising the bets per hole, and then letting loose with moster shots down the center.

Back in the 1950's or 1960's my grandfather "sandbagged" a car one time he and his friends raced. (Believe me, I do not do it!) It was too light and so they placed a spare transmission in the trunk of it. Imagine a 50 lb. bag on your back. It would surely slow you down. This car had about 250 lbs. extra. They snuck it out before the race, and presto, the car was now lighter and faster.

Sand bagging originally came from this idea, but using actual sand bags to weigh the car down to slow it down. Then they would sneak the bags out to make it faster and hopefully win the race.

Now days, it could be like the hidden nitrous idea: Do not let them know how fast you really are, and then pull out the big guns when money is on the line.

Basically, it is a form of cheating, how ever mild or extreme one wants to do it. Think: would you want to race hidden nitrous or know about your opponent having it?

if you have cable look for the program pinks its all about racing and the things people do and will say that they will not do but do it anyway.its just like anything else when you sandbag you dont show all you have one the 1st or 2nd race but in the end to win you will bring out all the big guns to do anything to win and take the pink slip (the title) for the car you race against. like in bowling also you sandbag the 3 weeks into the season just to help with you average to better you handicap then really show off and win all you can for you and your team. hope this helps
