I'd like a little more info before I answer this completely but if you have already run some of the software others have suggested and you are still getting a message about a trojan in System Volume Restore then editing the registry is definitely something to avoid. If this is the case then what has happened is that you HAD a trojan and before it was removed XP's system restore service copied and compressed it into an archive. Some anti-virus and anti-spyware programs can't work with compressed files and therefore can't access them. The good news is that if this is what has happened to you, you don't have to do anything! As long as the Trojan is only listed in System Volume Restore then XP will delete it in a few days as it makes new system restore archives.

To remove the trojan, I suggest you use an Anti-spyware and/or Anti-Virus program, editing the Windows Registry does not always work and is only for very advanced users.
To remove your trojan, go download free programs,
www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware
and
www.grisoft.com
These two programs will work together to eliminate that trojan (select the free versions when you download.)
On a side note, if you are interested in playing around with your registry, go to Start --> Run --> Type "Regedit". You are now in your Registry system, you will see various folders concerning different aspects of your system, e.g. for each user, for each network, etc. To edit these "keys" you will need to access a binary file and change the values. However, like I said, it is very complicated and not worth the hassle. There are plenty of programs that exist that can help you change various parts of your registry if needed.

DO NOT remove a trojan using RegEdit, it won't actually remove the trojan, just the access to the Trojan. The Trojan will still be on the Hard Drive. And the way to use RegEdit is go to Start/Run/ and type Regedit (however THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND CAN DESTROY YOUR WINDOWS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING.)
The best thing to do is go to Yahoo and type in "Trojan Remover" then download one that seems easy to work with.
Good luck.

Go to a site such as Symantec.com and get their instructions on what to edit and what to delete- Yes, you can really screw things up if you change or delete the wrong things...
Its easy to get to, click Start then Run and type regedit
That will launch the registry editor. Look for the values that they tell you to and change or delete them...
Again, be careful, if your not comfortable, take it to a computer store you trust (not all are trusted, but there must be some in your area) or get one of your friends that might be a geek and ask them to do it for you. Do not get a nerd, it takes a geek to get it done...
