How do I remove a brain tumor? Where should I cut......

Sorry, it just amazes me that people want to do work themselves when they have no clue.

Another answer suggests using electrical tape. Twisting wires together and covering with tape is NOT CORRECT. A "wire nut" must be used. It provides the pressure on the wires, not just insulation. Wires twisted together without a properly installed wire nut or other wire connector is a fire waiting to happen. If you don't know how to properly install electrical wiring, you shouldn't be doing this work.

If I were doing this fan, I would have an HVAC contractor install the fan for venting, since I know nothing about how to do that properly. Then I would wire it up, since I am qualified to do that.

Locate where you want the switch to go. Then locate where you want the fan to go. Buy some wire. Then punch a hole in the wall where you want the switch to go. Run the wire through the wall from the switch to the fan. I am really not sure how to wire it but I would suggest the you turn off the power before you start working on this project.

When planning any do it yourself project, it's good to assess the risk/ benefit ratio, before committing yourself. A house is really expensive, and damaging your home can cost not only money, but also time and inconvenience. It's good that you're thinking this through, before you start. Since improperly installed electrical work can not only kill you, but burn down the house, special consideration should be given to any prospective DIY project that involves electricity. Since this unit will be in a Bath Room, it is inevitable that someone with water on their skin will attempt to turn the fan on or off. I use the word "attempt", because if the switch is improperly grounded, they may not succeed. Think of the money and time costs. Also, remember that your home-owner's insurance might consider you negligent and refuse to pay for repairs caused by your work. It may be better to volunteer for a little paid overtime at work, and use the money to hire a pro.

OK, lets' talk about this. If you were well qualified to do this, you would already know the answer. Not being smart here, just trying to help. Electricity is not something to play with. It can kill you or at least hurt you. Improper installation of your fan and you can cause a fire. Improper venting and you will dump all that moisture into your attic. So, do you call for professional help, which should cost under $200, or do you try to explain to your insurance agent how you burnt you house down ?

I am not expert, but I just did his same task myself a few months ago. I recommend if you want step by step instructions (some are better than others), you can type 'install bathroom fan' into the search bar of your browser. It'll bring up a number of sights that have basic steps for installation. The Lowe's one seemed like it might help.

number one it should be in the box the fan comes in, if there was a fan in that place already, you just match up the colors of wires, and tape with electrical tape when you have the wires joined. push it up into the ceiling, screw into place, and there you are, we did it about six months ago.

Turn off breaker to that switch. Replace your lightswitch w/ a double switch box w/ 2 switches.

Pull wire to fan from switch.

Hook up wires.
