I prefer tampons because they're less messy than pads. All of the liquids are contained in the tampon and they don't leak out everywhere. Wearing a pad to me is kind of like wearing a diaper and you have to make sure the pads don't shift. A tampon stays in place until you take it out.

Tampons are comfortable and you can still wear thong underwear and not worry. Also, tampons come in different sizes so you could put one or two in your pocket and not have to be embarrassed by carrying a huge plastic wrapped pad around.
