If the modem only allows one computer to be connected to it, you will have to use a router, since the modem probably only lets you use 2 IP addresses, one for the modem and the other for the device connecting to the modem. The router will allow you to create a new network with as many IPs as you should need.

If the modem allows you to connect more than one computer you can use a switch or hub, but I would still use a router for added protection (most routers have some firewall capabilites, a firewall helps protect your network from attacks). If you need more ports than what your router provides (most provide 4-8), then use a switch connected to the router rather than a hub.

Each computer will need a connection, an ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card) or a wireless card if the router is wireless.

Get a router (this will assign each computer with a IP on the network), and a switch (this is better than a HUB, a hub will send data to every device connected to it while a switch will know what packets it should send to which location), NIC is the best unless you are going with a fiber optics network. USB is only used as a temporary solution.

I would suggest a router because they generally include superior firewalls. Personally for home use I prefer Netgear, US Robotics D-Link or Linksys in that order of preference. Every computer you want to connect must have a NIC which can be either wired or wireless just keep in mind of course that wireless NICs will need a wireless router :)
