Go for upbeat, quiet piano lounge music if you can.

Examples (piano versions of so people can still talk and enjoy their cocktails):

Classical Music:
Chopin's Waltzes
Mozart Tunes
Bach (some excellent recommendations that I always play include Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and Little Fugue in G Minor...while his that particular fugue has a sad sound, it makes for excellent background music)

Modern Music:
I Will Always Love you-Whitney Houston
I Honestly Love you-Oliva Newton John
One Moment in Time-Whitney Houston (I think)
Always Be My Baby-Mariah Carey (I think)
I'll Be Waiting For You (/w violin solo)-Celine Dion

Basically, anything that SOUNDS sappy, have your piano player do it with no voice (or with if your choice may so be...) You can also forget voice and get a really good soloist, like a flautist, a trumpeter (though that might be a bit harsh for love songs), a clarinet, violin, or cello.

But by cocktail hour, I'm assuming you want people to drink, have fun, and enjoy the union :)

Hope I've helped.
