irregular periods can be due to several factors like, poly cystic overies,taking birth contol pills,or onset of menopause etc. a more specific answer is possible only if u give some more details like your age, do u have kids etc.
Among people in the age of 20 -35 the reason is mostly due to poly cystic ovaries,ie.having small cyst in your overies and hence ovulation is not happening on a regular basis,there will be variation in your hormone levels creating irregular periods.
you can have an obgyn exam u and do an ultrasound to rule out PCOS. good luck.

If they were regular and are now irregular it may be stress related.If they never were regular it is called amenorreah and you should see a doctor to help regulate them.They usually prescribe a round of birth control to regulate them.
