My 78-yr-old gran was just in the hospital for a polyp that was causing so much gas that she lost her appetite. While she was in the hospital, they were giving her Prevacid to get the gas down. Now that she's leaving, they're giving her a prescription for an IBS (Irritable Bowell Syndrome) medication to keep it down.
If Prevacid or something like that doesn't get rid of it, I'd suggest she see her doctor.

Cut back on citrus foods.. (tomato, grapefruit) and up the intake of fiber. Mini wheats is a good way to clear things up. My grandma also eats oatmeal and whole grain bread. The gas is still there, but not as painful and it doesn't..."smell" as bad.
