What're your views on the government's decision to ban 'designer babies' - the rights of the couple to determine the gender, physical or social characteristics of the yet-to-be-born child?

Just the another intrusion into our private lives. The government legislating morality again. Pressing their religious and moral values on everybody. Whether I agree or disagree with it, I feel the government has not a right to interfere with our private lives.

Liberals understand as much as a container of rocks.. The Liberal ideology is a theory , fostered via a delusional, illogical minority and which holds forth ideals that have no foundation extremely. Criminals do no longer pay any interest to rules... If weapons have been ever banned than in basic terms the undesirable men could have them..Criminals desire unarmed sufferers!! Having a gun won't help each and all of the time yet being defenseless will never help.. whilst seconds rely calling 911 and asking the undesirable guy to attend isn't a conceivable selection. greater proper to have a gun and not desire it than to desire it and not have it!!! **Police do no longer take care of you from crime, they commonly basically inspect the crime after it occurs.** @

Thank God! Have you seen Gattica? That's exactly what will happen down the line. Babies born with birth defects or chromosomal abnormalities will not receive any benefits. No allowances will be made for them. There will be no handicap access. There will be no medicines for people with diseases, or they will be too expensive for anyone to afford. People will eventually be censured for having a baby who is not perfect.

It's a really frightening thing when we've reached the point where we can manipulate nature so directly. We are messing with fire and we are too stupid to understand it. It will be years down the line before all the repercussions are known and then it will be too late and we will look back and be amazed that we were too backwards to have predicted the fall out.

Look at what is happening in China because of sex selection.

that's a toughie... on one hand, the gvt has no right to tell you what type of kid to have. on the other hand, you have no right to decide what type of kid to have, either. it should be left up to God (or to chance, or whatever you believe in).

if everybody started "designing" their babies, balance would be thrown off. there wouldn't be enough females per males or vice versa; certain personalities and appearances would be in the majority just because of some passing fad.

most importantly, parents should love their children regardless of what gender the child is, how the child looks, or what its social characteristics are.

... so i think i am for the ban. i would prefer a ban over genetic modification in general (banning human cloning, etc, and encompassing a ban on designer babies), rather than a ban specifically on designer babies.

I agree with the ban.
I read a book once called "Last Book in the Universe". There were two kinds of people: one group was the "Elite", or the designer babies in the real world, the other group was everyone else. They were nobodies. The Elite deemed themselves gods and scorned everyone who wasn't as blond or as blue-eyed as they were.
I think there is no such thing as a perfect society. And if there was, would you want it?

I think most people get a little nervous when there is talk about genetic engineering of humans. It seems a lot like defying the will of God, and pushing things in directions that we may not be able to return from.

Maybe our minds will change in the future. For now, we are all a little uncertain that this was ever intended for us.

Sometimes I think government was formed to protect the people from themselves. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. In this situation, I think they did.
