In the US Navy, ships are titled like "U.S.S. Ronald Reagan". The USS stands for "United States Ship". In the British Navy, they are named like "HMS Dreadnought". The HMS means "Her (or His, depending) Majesty's Ship. Canada uses "HMCS Ottawa", for "Her Majesty's Canadian Ship", and many commonwealth countries follow this pattern. The Titanic was named "RMS Titanic", which stands for "Royal Mail Steamer", and was applied to any ship that carries mail and is common among large civilian ships. Technically, a ship would use the prefix only while contracted to carry mail, and would revert at other times to a standard type designation such as "SS", "Steam Ship".
