Iron deficiency is unlikely. PICA or other likely psychological disorders are probably the culprit. She may have also simply wanted to harm herself, or had an unhealthy obsession with having operations. Another answer is that she only wanted to committ suicide and thought the nails would puncture her stomach lining enough to cause a massive internal bleed.

Usually when nothing is mentioned regarding "the why" in articles like this, it's mental illness. Mentioning this obvious cause would make you go from irony to pity and the jist of the story is to create something to talk about amongst friends and co-workers.

I think she must have worked at the circus, as the Nail Biter, and a few made it down her throat. It was actually 119 nails, I think.
