My pediatrician recommended orajel, 1 ml of tylenol, and 1 ml of benadryl before she goes to bed for the night. That seems like a lot of medication at one time for such a little baby. Would you give this much medicine to your baby?

If you trust your doc, then follow their direction.

I love orajel, it does work. And tyleonol is very safe, and will help ease the aches for your baby. I use both these products a lot while my baby is in the hard-core teething stage.

As far as benadryl, the doc may be suggesting that for 2 reasons I can think of....1 - to help her (and you) get some sleep because it will make her drowsy. and....2 - as a decongestant because teething babies usually have lots of runny/snotty nose.

I have used benadryl before on my baby, but not during teething. Just during a cold. So it is safe to use.

In conjunction with all 3....total relief of pain for your baby, and help getting some well-needed sleep. If the teething is causing a whole lot of discomfort and sleeplessness, and really making you both miserable, I think the doc is probably trying to give you the help you went to him so desperately for. I'd go ahead.

Good luck.

I heard that orajel just gets washed away to quick to do any good. I have a seven month old who is also teething. It's not fun! I put his teething ring in the fridge or freezer depending on the type. Or you know those freezer pops in the plastic? I give him those and he chews on them then when they melt i just stick them back in the freezer. he loves them. I only give him Tylenol when he is really cranky. That seems like alot of medicine. Also try a cold wet wash cloth for her to suck on. I also message is gums with my finger, he seems to like this the most. But he can bite down hard! I'm going though the same thing right now, it also seems like he is eating and sleeping a little less. I know a new tooth is coming any day! Good Luck to you and you baby.

The nighttime teething gel has a stronger pain reliever in it than the regular teething gel.. The 1ml of tylenol is ok as is the benadryl. All the benadryl is going to do is make the baby sleepy, it's not going to help with the discomfort she's having.

Both my children were teething when they were four months old. I would give them 0.5ml of tylenol no more than 3 times daily and I kept a frozen supply of the infant water filled toys(they really do help). If you want to use the oragel please just use a very small amount placed directly on the affected area. To much can numb the whole mouth and throat. After all this alot of TLC and rocking helps give the baby security and allows the special bond that Mom and baby need!!!!!!

I dropperful (.08) of the infants tylenol drops. The benadryl will make him sleepy, no more than 1/4 teaspoon at that age. The naturopathic teething tablets also seem to work. The good news is, it doesn't last forever!

The orajel is basically useless, there is so much drool it gets washed away before it can work, Tylenol is a life saver, I have no clue why he said Benedryl other than it will make the kid sleepy........I agree stuff to chew on, toys, cool teething rings (cool in temp.) my kids used to like to "gum" on whole frozen carrots, and I would get a wash cloth wet (the corner of it only) and freeze it, that way they could chew on it and still hold on to something less cold.

Mostly it just really hurts and you are going to have to deal with the crying.....sorry. It's a kid thing.

tylenol relieves the pain and if you give it round the clock she wont have any pain to need relief. The benadryl is to make her fall asleep so that is up to you. I'd stick with the tylenol and just make sure to stay on top of the schedule to keep the pain from coming back until the tooth cuts.

I wouldn't recommend mixing medications. Orajel is commonly used (putting this creme directly on the child's gum), however check with your doctor before using this.
Teething tips during the day: trying letting them chew on frozen waffles or bagels. There are also lots of infant toys with water in them- you can put these in the fridge or freezer to let the water get cold.

Follow the doctor's advice religiously. Orajel works well directly on affected gums. Are you sure she doesn't have thrush?

Do NOT put a baby to bed with anything to chew on... could cause choking. Nothing in the crib but baby.

I don't know about the benadryl but tylenol for sure. Also try freezing some wet clothes for her to chew on - it feels good on their gums. Friends have also used frozen bagels (but watch closely for choking hazard. ) Also teething rings that you can buy at any baby store.
