why is iceland covered in trees and greenland is covered in ice and snow?

i looked it up:
the green that shows up on the atlas is grasslands. iceland has virtually zero trees. it originally(at first settling, 1100 years ago) had many forests. the settlers cut and cleared about 99% of it. wood was used for building and fuel. they wanted the trees gone for sheep grazing also.
