the beginning. try to get an understanding for not just the technology but the process you are designing and programming for. try to understand your audience and how your program/site will benefit them and have its desire effect. anyone can make a cool site or program, but who cares if it doesn't do what people want it to do.

talk to any friends you have who are in the business. find a mentor, or someone you want to emulate.
Community college is a cheap, good start.
Internships are good too, if you can work for free.
But you MUST spend the hours.

You'd probably do best if you go to university to learn how to program and how to design and implement useful algorithms.
