While a fast 40 time will get you noticed, it's what you do when you have the ball in your hand that gets you to the next level. I would guess that as a freshman RB you would want a time at or below a 5.1 second 40. You should work to knock that down to IDEALLY 4.4 or better by the time your junior year rolls around. That is flying and will take you places.
That being said, to lower your times, work on controlling your body movements. Sloppy, flopping arms and legs will cost you one or two tenths. Also concentrate on your starts, starting low and lean all the way thru the finish. DO NOT STOP RUNNING UNTIL YOU CROSS THE LINE.
Sometimes, a person is not genetically able to go that fast, so be prepared to make a switch to Fullback and block more if you want to stay in the back field but can't break it below, say, 4.6.

In racing a 40 time would be any time in the 40 second range,from 40>49.To get a faster 40 time,you'd either have to lighten your vehicle or do up the engine OR get a better driver.What is a good 40 time? 40:00:00 would be the best possible 40 time.

The 4.40 40 is a pretty widespread standard, but in high school anything under 5 is good. I coached a couple of sports, and even if you are not born a stud, this is something you can work on developing and get better with time.

If your a freshman? You are not going to run a 4.4 or even a 4.7 as your body is still developing. If you want a great 40? Work on your burst and acceleration if you already have decent speed.
I'd recommend lunges, squats, bleacher runs and shuttles. Work on your thighs and calves and you'll be alright. Aim for a 5.0 or 4.99.

Strengthing your whole body (especially ABs...so important). Stretching your whole body as well, helps with strides.
Keep running, don't look back, keep running. 150% effort.
But one HUGE factor is the explosion off the start. The reaction time involved is a key element. 1/100's and even 1/10's of seconds are lost due to sprinters not sprinting off at the instant the gun is sounded. Work with agility ladders can help with this. Also training with starting blocks can help get you the feel of how a successful explosion should feel like.

run often, do squats and straight leg deads every chance u get, and make sure to do plenty of calf burnouts, that will help you tremendously. and as a freshman you shouldnt be worried to much about your 40 time.. just hit the weights everyday ( take breaks on the weekend for body to recover) and eat a bananna everyday after you lift (for recovery as well).

Run steps or bleachers.
Push a car or pull it.
Harness pull weight through sand.

Sprinting is all muscle strength. Lifting weights will get you the faster 40 time. I would suggest that you do squats and hamstring curls to get faster.

I have heard that running in a swimming pool will build strength and speed. I myself prefer running uphill. I dropped about a second from last year.
