No matter what, it seems like some people just don't understand that enough is enough when it comes to borrowing my phone every day, my vacuum, my computer, and bumming cigarettes day after day after day. I finally starting saying no and now I am the worst person these people know. I just got fed up after 6 months with some of the people living here at the same apartment complex, because they take advantage of my kindness and generosity. How about a couple of bucks occasionally for the use or a homemade dish of food. I even let a gal use my van twice. The second time she brought back the van with the spare mounted. The original was blown to smitherines, and didnt help pay for the gasoline let alone a new tire of $85.00......I still don't feel better complaining about this. My own fault I reckon. People will only use you as far as you allow them to. Any suggestions for the future or about the way I am being treated now? THANKS

The reason you are appalled is because you cannot believe the audacity of these people... No damn manners & no consideration! But yes, it is partially your fault. Just remember, when you do a good deed (i.e., give something freely), do not expect anything in return. If you happen to get something back then great! If you lend something, don't EVER expect to get it back (just pretend it's lost)... This way you can make up your mind ahead of time on how much you are willing to part with & if the people receiving are worth it!

Unfortunately, to some extent it's just human nature for people to take advantage. And it's not really a new concept. You may have heard the expression "neither a borrower nor a lender be..." It's a very old expression, because people have always had a tendency to overstep their bounds. It doesn't mean they're bad. Just not as considerate as they probably should be. So it's best just not to get in the habit of helping people TOO much, especially if you don't know them really well. It's a delicate balance, because it's a GOOD thing to help people, but at some point it stops "helping" and starts "enabling." Don't worry about them thinking you're "the worst person they know." Sooner or later, they'll understand that they were wrong to take advantage of you and that you were totally in the right to put a stop to it. If they don't eventually realize that, then they're probably not worth worrying about because at that point it means they're pretty selfish.
Hope this makes sense and helps.

It's never a bad thing to be kind to people.......These people in your complex sound like a bunch of losers, though.....If I was you I would move into a new complex and try not to be giving to the point where others see that you are easily taken advantage of....I too have a big, trusting heart and have to be careful at times.....Trust me, you'll learn.......
