In the past, they used to chew tobacco. As a result, they had to spit. With time, they started spitting in the baseball and well, things started happening......good pitches......soooooo....Now, even if they don't chew tobacco, many spit anyway. It has become a "trademark" for baseball players.

It's not that they feel the need to spit the have this stuff in there mouth called chewing tobacco and it make them spit.

Even though I love the game, at times, it can be slow and boring. So, most people need something to satisfy their oral fixation. So, some players chew on either tobacco or sunflower seeds. So, inevitably, they need to spit.

wondered that since I began watching baseball 3 months ago
they look so ridiculous, there is a lot of pressure in other sports and they don't spit like that

I spit all the time. People in college and pro games spit because they have chew in their lip not for any of those other stupid reasons

This old dude who lives next door always spits when he talks. He came over to talk yesterday, so i kept the door closed and just talked to him through the screen. That seems to do the trick.

Back in the day they would chew tobacco...and obviously they couldn't SWALLOW that garbage..therefore they spit it...those who have given up the tobacco are stuck with the habit...
