It's a forewarning from your vehicle that something isn't right, it could be anything. Your best bet is to go have it looked at.

Loose gas cap, the #1 reason. Make sure it's clicked on tight. If that is the only problem, it'll go off in a few days. It'w in your owners manual and often written right on the gas cap.
AAMCO says they'll check it for free. That way, a loose cap can result in you getting a transmission repair.
Some dealers will give you a freebie the first time it happens.

It could be a number of different things. it could be nothing. once in a while they'll have a glitch and just come on. Disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes and reconnect. It will reset the computer. If the light stays off, no problem. If it comes back on, you'd better get it checked.

Probably a bad sensor. You need to take it in and have a dio done on it.Waiting will only cause the problem to get worse.know this from experiance.Dio's cost about $ 80-$100.

depending on the year of your car....this light usually indicates a problem with the emission system, but could also effect driveabilty. if the light flashes while driving it indicates that imediate dammage could happen.
