Because women traditionally had servants who dressed them.
Men needed to be able to dress/undress and go for their sword.

As others said, it's from back in a day when some people had others to dress them. (Have to assume the rich had this...) And I guess it stuck. Sometimes now I notice buttons will be on the other side, but not often.

not necessarily. im wearing a pair of jeans (girls jeans) and they button left over right. You had me thinking for a minute though...lol
