Way too hot for me, but resorts have A/C or you can spend your time in the ocean or a pool.I'd sleep days and play in the eve. Do not rent a car. Take a bus for forty cents -or less than ten bucks for a taxi around town. It's a crime to be in a car accident. Always have a cellphone that works in that part of Mexico and if you crash a car say you're hurt so you can go to the hospital- where you can use the phone and call a lawyer, your insurance agent and family/friends to help you out. These problems are rare but do occur, so be prepared. Chances are you will have a great time. Even so, check out Mazatlan, Durango, or even Xalapa in Veracruz state (Where they filmed Romancing the Stone) Cancun is a resort city. The other cities are real and tourism is just part of the economy rather than ALL of it! I will say the beef steaks in Durango are terrific and the Seafood in Mazatlan may be the world's best- especially the 101 ways they cook those huge shrimp! Don't know what your interests are, but if you like culture as well as drinking dancing and making whoopie those other cities will offer you much much more.

Beware of travelling in Mexico, period. I have seen reports on CNN and other channels that they have had a spike in viscious violence, even around what had previously been "safe resort areas". Around Alcapulco they've had several beheadings even, and they weren't the only instances of this! (We only hear about the ones in Bagdad, but not in Alcapulco...public relations and selective reporting, I guess.) Basically, I would encourage vacationing in the United States (and it's islands, like the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Florida Keys) so if you get in trouble, at least you know you'll have basic US legal rights. Also, consider British territories like Jamaica and the Bahamas. They also have similar laws (that we based ours on after all), English is universally understood, and are great, safe places to go. But of course, you have to be careful ANYWHERE. Avoid places with unstable or corrupt governments or whose legal system is "suspect", IE Mexico, Aruba, Columbia, etc.

WAY WAY too hot in August plus too much risk for storms....
not that Cancun is terrific at other times - this city is NOTHING mexican - it was plotted and designed by computers.. if you want real mexico pick a different city...its just like any other north american city - but with a beach....

It's hurricane season and is very hot in August. However, if you're looking for a beautiful beach and ocean to swim in it's great, and the hurricane possibility is just a risk you take--it basically lasts for the entire summer into October so there's not much you can do about it anyway.

It's hot, humid, and smack dab in the middle of hurricane season. If at all possible, I would suggest another month. I work for a travel agency (in the business for over 30 years) and can help you pick the perfect vacation at the perfect time. Email me at travelbooky@sbcglobal.net and perhaps I can help.

I would avoid it as the risk of hurricanes is higher in August and September!

Well August is still technically hurricane season, but I bet the atmosphere there is mild, yet humid.

Well that's the absolute peak of hurricane season and it's 4 degrees hotter than Hell, but if you're adventurous and like it hot, go for it!

Yeah right. It's hot, and many many tourists. Go sometime when college kids aren't parading around the place as if they own it, just because they can drink legally.
