Multiple reasons-
1. Raised wrong- been abused
2. Hung out with the wrong croud
3. Had a bad day at work etc.
4. Just plain heartless

I'm willing to bet that you yourself are evil, heartless and mean, given the right circumstances. Life is a struggle. Being mean is an in-borne defense mechanism. Get over it already.
