Not sure if right section, but who cares..

for me I think a certain event that happened in 1986 in florida was the most awful event, that must have been truly sad event at NASA cape canarveral. I'm glad I was too young to be interested in space then and that I didn't watch it on TV. My heart goes out to the families however, God bless you.

ADD: ok people thanks for answers, but I really want answers about single events, 9/11 is ok, but things like ww2 are not. Wars go on for years, I want answers that are single events that happen in seconds or days. sorry for not clarifying better. My answer was the Challeneger disaster by the way, very sad because it was such a happy event that went wrong right in front on an entire nation. (i'm not american but I feel for yanks after that, 9/11 was sad and very sick as well)

It would definitely be the holocaust, caused by a very sick man, for all the wrong reasons. Up there in equal 2nd place, would have to be Tsunami, 9/11, New Orleans, and then at 3rd place, what we hear nothing about is all the devastation in Africa and the militia fighting and all the innocents being killed by sick crimelords who have no value of life.

I know all the people who have answered have given totally reasonable answers but do you not think that the travesties that go unreported because they don't hit the lives of westerners are the worst... the tsunami wasn't the first of it’s kind but it killed lots of tourists and made the world take note, 9/11 wasn't the first terrorist attack but it was on American soil and the holocaust was not the only mass genocide of people (god this is one I really don't want to look lightly on)... but what about genocide, earthquakes and terrorists attacks that don’t reach into our lives so those affected are left without help, without our aide... they are the things that make me really sad

It has to be the holocaust and the atrocities inflicted by the Imperial Japanese army in WWII. No disrespect to the victims of 911, but the holocaust wiped out half a nation, being the earlier example of death arising from religious intolerance and fanaticism. When will it end? Only with the end of ideological idealism and orthodoxy...

911 without a doubt . I remember exactly what I was doing that day. It's burned into my mind forever. If I'm not mistaken it's the first time this country was attacked by another on our on shores. I haven't forgotten Pearl Harbor of course. This was closer to home and in my lifetime. It wasn't a military base etc. The loss of life was devastating but the loss of feeling safe and normal has never returned . Not for me any way. My husband and daughter are both military. My daughter finished her duties this year. God bless all of our soldiers thats what the coming holiday is all about. They fight for our Independence and die for it.

World War II. Many soldiers died because of colonialism and chavanistic nationalism. The Holocaust, a huge aspect of it killed many Jews. Sadly, there are still anti-Semites and chavanists who believe in world domination. Check out this site.....www.newamericancentury.org. The site states
"American leadership is good both for America and for the world"...ewww, global domination anyone? Donald Rumsfeld is a strong member of this organization. Also, check out wikipedia.ord>pnac.
