Yes of course they do. I have travelled around and I tend to come across cultured and educated Americans who have been to all sorts of countries, AND know lots of facts about them. Even better still, they also have had anecdotes about their times there.
I have heard plenty of stories about so-called 'dumb, ignorant Americans' but have been pleasantly surprised by my actual experiences of them as people.

The Americans dont even know what a border is. They believe that when you get to somewhere like Martha's Vineyard (heading east) that life just peters out. They got a shock when doing the same to the west off the coast of California they discovered Hawaii

very few thinking Americans realise this. The rest merely criticise you for your spelling as they can't think of a fair answer or decent argument to your question. I was amused recently when meeting a couple who travelled to Europe to, as they said, 'do the grand tour'. They based themselves in England, flew to N Ireland for a day, took the tunnel to France for a day, ferried to Holland and back in 48 hours and actually said they were going back to show off all the stamps in their passports. (Some of which had to be begged as it's the norm to travel to other European countries without having to obtain a visa). So in my opinion the short answer to your question is no, they don't realise it.

The highly cultured and educated do, but most don't.
Most can't even name 1/3 of the Countries in the world.

does the american realise the irony in there correction of your spelling of realise... no because americans don't get irony.
and yes they do, they realise that they all came from somewhere else, ireland, italy, mexico... wherethefuckever... what the also realise is that others want to do the same this is not something it would seem most of them are up for... they also realise that there are places in the world the don't understand/fear

some do but most of them have not got passports so the usa canada and mexico is all the world thay know
