I work at a boy scout camp and I love archery, so here's my take.
Compound is best for hunting or range work. If you aren't very strong then this may be the bow for you because on a 75lbs bow you are only holding 25 with your arm. The other 50 is in the mechanical leverage in the bow. This bow is the most difficult to maintain and the most expensive.
Recurves are very beautifully and shoot very well. They are like a middle ground between compound and long. A skilled archer can hit all most anything at a distance with this bow.
The Long bow is by far my favorite! they shoot very well and easy to work. They are also the cheapest of the lot. While much larger than the comp or Recurve Thy shoot very well, how ever some of you liter people my have to watch out because these are hard to string and to shoot.
Brand doesn't seem to matter but what does matter is the material that it is made out of. Wood is good but it needs to be a strong but flexible. Fiber glass is O.K.but you would have to research the stuff they are using. Carbon fiber is strong and lite but it is expensive so watch out.
Peace

Good question, I used to say traditional bow, hands down, but if one uses a compound bow set for their individual measurements, the compound bow wins!

You need to find those things out before you haul off and buy a bow. You shouldn't buy something you know nothing about. So make sure you do some shopping around at hunting stores and you talk to the staff about getting into archery. -Connor

I prefer traditional longbows because I think they are just a lot more simple to use.
