Sure, sometimes. Though most are doing it because they already made their money and want something important to do. The thing about non-profits though is that you can't take the profits home, you have to plow it into the enterprise, but you can pay yourself a salary.

I am not sure what 501 c3 means, but I can tell you this;

If you make $20,000 per year, drive a moderate car, live in a moderate place, keep yourself a reasonable budget, you can life good.

If you make $100,000 per year, you own a big and expensive house, lease two expensive cars, have a handful of credit cards maxed out, you are working ONLY to pay bills. And THAT is not "living."
