Hi
i have a celeron 433 mhz pc which i am trying to upgrade to celeron 900 mhz.it has 370 socket and maximum bus speed of 100mhz which suits the new processer. replacing the processer is not the problem but when i turn the computer on the monitor(compaq S710) does not show anything the green light of monitor turns on and off repeatedly. if i disconnect the data cable it shows message "no signal"just like normal monitor will do but as soon as i connect the data cable it does the same on off thing.further if i switch back to my old cpu i.e celeron433 mhz ,it works fine..

any help would be much appreciated.

A blinking green monitor light sounds as if your BIOS is not loading which means your new processor is not being read. That means you need a BIOS update. Think about it, if your computer had a 433 processor and the 900 was made after the 433 then your motherboards BIOS needs to be updated. Put the 433 back in and go to Compaq and down load the last BIOS update for your computer and hope it covers your new 900. 370 socket and 100 mhz fsb is not the only thing you look for when buying a new processor. If the new processor has a different voltage or a multiplier not covered by your motherboard or your motherboards new BIOS update then you are stuck with your 433.

there really isn'g anything magical about the display. Something (anything) should display on the screen.

In the first few seconds, you should see the computer booting to it's BIOS (it will display the amount or memory and some other stuff). If itn's not even displaying that, there's something seriously wrong with your machine.

Check your machines documentation. To run a higher CPU on that motherboard, you may need to set some dip swithes. Your CPU cover might have a diagram depicting this.

If it's not that, you might be on your way back to Best Buy to pick up a new computer.

Good luck.

I had the same problem when i tried to upgrade mine, if the processor chip got dropped or you touched the chip without anti-static gloves or anything protective you may have shorted out the chip, causing the screen to not work, only a VERY small amout of static is needed to short out a processor, hopefully thats not the case, id take it to a comp shop and have them test the chip to see if its bad

FYI my motherboard could hold the chip without any modifications to BIOS

When you turn on your comp w/the 900 is the fan all you hear? if thats the case then its your motherboard(which you already said it wasnt), if you hear the drives click and dont read then its your processor, if the drives read and doesnt display then its an incompatible video card and/or BIOS, some chips arent compatible with some VC's

hi, it is not in all threat a threat to offer a definitive answer even though it must be the ability furnish. Is there even an led lit on the motherboard? attempt taking areas out to in basic terms a minimum configuration to be certain if this is going to ability up. Arnak

i think the new CPU is the problem, check the memory(SDRAM) maybe its loose. Remove the memory use pencil eraser to cleen the terminals on the memory then place it back and check, make sure to remove the power first before you do anything.

It sounds like that new processor of yours is dead.
